26 millions !

10 November 2006

Today, VLC media player version 0.8.5 has broken the 26 million download bar !

This does not mean 26 million people use VLC, since a few things are corrupting the statistics:

  • this only count direct or mirror downloads, which means that unofficial mirrors, big download sites that use a replica of the files are not counted !
  • as usual, VLC in linux distributions are not countable since most of the greatest distribution use some repository for their files;
  • 1 download != 1 user

Still, this is a good news, especially when we know that 0.8.5 has some very important issues with subtitles, flv files, wmv files and screensavers !

There are some interesting stats :

  • The windows downloads are 10 times more important than Mac-OS ones. It used to be 7 times for 0.8.4
  • The source downloads have been down dramatically compared to 0.8.4. Why ? People don’t build VLC ? A bug in the accounting ? I am gonna check.

    Well, the problem is not about VLC, but about the 3rd party libs that can’t be build under MSVC, like ffmpeg.

    So if you do so, you will not be able to have a functionnal VLC.

    I’d like to! But I need it compiled with MSVC (for my project). I already wrote on the vlc forum, that in the 0.8.5 and 0.8.6 sources libvlc.dsp contains no files, so I can’t compile libvlc :(

    //I am gonna check.It would be great.

    Of course, many windows users downloads a few times VLC media player.

    But, linux users are not counted, and neither the indirect links, indirect mirrors, etc…

    So, it gives a good idea of the number of users. :D

    Being under windows I don’t build VLC or anything else … plus I may have downloaded about 10+ times because of reinstallation (windows you know).
