Yet another time: copyrights, GPL infringements and phishing

Introduction

iVivo

If you read that blog, you might have seen the iVivo story.

I did not finish that story because it was too boring, but finally they provide the code source for only $99… And their site is the same stupid things.

eBay

I did not blogged on eBay sellers selling VLC media player exe for $1, because this was not really a copyright infringement. And boring.

And we had a few GPL infringer, but a mail turned them down. So not really some interesting things to say.

But those ones are doing it at another level. German and Spanish…

So, now some new forgery have been reported. Both of them have bought vlc word on google. google.es and google.de

So let’s start by the spanish guys… The site seems to be yet another download site like on that screenshot:

But when you install it, it ask you to send overtaxed SMS, as you can see it here:

Do I need to say that the license are not shown and the site policy is against our copyright ?

But, this was just the beginning, the IPTV site copied our Website:

It is just like a phishing site!

But still, I install it. It starts with to display a stupid and dangerous license that warns you they are going to install adwares and banners in your system at the same time as VLC media player.

Those guys are infringing our site copyright and are using VLC media player to install crap on their systems. They are adding restriction to the installation of VLC, which is against GPL license, and they use Google Sponsored links to use phishing technics.

Cool, right ?

Conclusion

I would have prefered spending some time on usefull things instead of doing screenshots tonight.

    It looks as if Netlink Investements uses a collection of software for their phishing sites: For the graphic viewer “XnView” we have the same problem, see http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtop… for more details.

    Netlink Investments resides in Panama, so I’m afraid there is little to do about it. The team of the computer journal c’t somtimes tracks such things, perhaps it might be a good idea to point them to those phishing sites.

    This is sick! Is there anything that we users (read silent supporters) can do about it?
    Could we perhaps add a “I support VLC” with a link to the real site www.videolan.org? That would make thhe Google page ranking higher?
